On the 22nd of April 2010,  Nigerians woke up to the news that one of it’s fiercest rappers at the time Dagrin had passed away in a fatal accident. Dagrin who was on a steady rise at the time is credited for taking Yoruba rap music to the mainstream. He succeeded where his predecessors like Lord of Ajasa, Reminisce, had struggled to make an impact.

After the death of Dagrin, the indigenous rap industry really needed a savior. It did not take long before Olamide stepped up to that responsibility, and ever since he held on to the crown he has not let go. He took indigenous rap a whole new level, going on to compete with the more mainstream Afro dancehall artists like Wizkid and Davido. In what was regarded as a healthy competition, Olamide was frequently being featured on everything that came out during the time. Never have we seen anyone take rap to this level. Following the successes of most of his song — something most people would describe as “Back to Back” hits, Olamide became one of the most respected brands in the music business and in a few years created a platform for other artists to excel. Olamide built YBNL from the ground up and gave acts like lil Kesh, Chinko Ekun, Adekunle Gold, and more recently Fireboy DML  the opportunity to reach the limelight.

He is also behind brands like OLIC that sell out thousands of concert seats every year and is rumored to be close Allies to the Lagos State Government and partners with them on several events and shows. His career has not been without controversy, In 2015, he went toe to toe with Don Jazzy, the owner of Mavin records — one of the most powerful labels in Africa. A fight broke out over the headies Awards that went to Reekado Banks. During the ceremony, Olamide came on stage and expressed disappointment over the choice of Reekado Banks as the winner, stating that his artist lil Kesh was a more suitable candidate to win the brand new car that is typically awarded to the winner of the Next rated category at the awards.

DJ Baddo releases the best of Olamide Mix and it puts together of all the Major hits that have made Olamide who he is today.

Nigeria boasts a host of amazing music genre’s highlife music, Afrobeat, Apala, Juju, Fuji, folk music, alternative music, Rap, Funk, Afro-pop and a hybrid or mix of several genres. Although Afro-beat seems to be the countries highest selling and most followed style at the moment, artists still create chart-topping singles using a combination of sounds from other genres. While Afro-beat centers on heavy percussions, fast passed beats aimed to make you move, alternative music is more thought-provoking and lyrics based good for making you relax and meditate. There is a really thin line these days in classification as many alternative songs can pass for Afrobeat songs and vice versa but generally, alternative music is not yet mainstream. Famous DJ Cboi releases an alternative mix of Nigerian and foreign songs that have made it to the top of the chats in recent times.

Oluwa BJ is a fast-rising Afrobeat artist based in Indiana USA. He takes us on a journey of his early life on his new single blessings. If you grew up in a Nigerian or African home you would relate to this song. He tells a tale of how difficult it was to get along with his parents during his childhood.

Oluwa BJ - Blessings

African parents are almost all alike when it comes to bringing up their children and Oluwa BJ does a great job in emphasizing it. I love the introspective nature of the song and I am confident you will enjoy it also.

I started from the bottom/ Eyin enemies calm down ke ma gboro/
See childhood e no easy/ Everyday P Man e too busy/
Big shout to my mama she stood as a mother and a father/
calm down let me take you back x 2 /
When I small I spoil many things…

All the way from Indiana USA we present Tonight by Mr. Carter ft T-ME singsong. Two Nigerian acts who have been on the rise in the Afro-beat scene in the USA.

Tonight is a feel-good song that will put you in the mood to have a good time. A perfect blend of Rap provided by Mr. Carter and smooth R&B Vocals delivered by T-ME Singsong. While T-ME serenades the place with his modulated vocals, Mr. Carter comes through with some very immaculate flows to match the beat produced by Tyemmy. The beat is heavily influenced by the Hip-hop culture in the USA but also laced with some African percussions which are typical of most Nigerian songs.

Life is full of stress and sometimes you have to make a conscious decision to have a great time.

Afrorolls reminds us of the Great Fela Anikulapo Kuti in this highly spiritual new single titled Ire. This is Afrobeat in the purest form. Ire means blessings, it is a powerful prayer song asking chi for blessings, according to Afrorolls we all need grace and blessings from Oluwa to make day to day progress.

Ire is Dedicated to all the young people trying hard to find their way through the hardship of this country. People find themselves in extreme conditions having crossed the boarders into Foreign lands for greener pastures. When I wake up in the morning these are all my prayer points, I just decided to put them all in a song, I pray for Ire (Blessings), for Ife (love), for success, good kids, nice houses, divine favor, and good vibes.

“Ki ire ko ya lo odo mi,  ki Iyanu ya lo odo mi
Make I get some girls for my hood, wey dey feel all my gbedu ,
Make Oyinbo dey fell all my tunes”

“This is a prayer for blessings, divine favor, and acceptance,” Afrorolls says.

The song produced by Killertunes also has a political side to it, it features samples from what sounds like the voice of Olusegun Obasanjo, a war veteran and former two-time president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. The sample sees him endorsing Dele Momodu’s presidential candidacy saying he is the most qualified young person in Nigeria. This vocal sample on this song is mind-blowing and can have so many meanings. It will be interesting to ask Afrorolls or Killertunes why the choice of that sample. Killertunes is also responsible for hits like Manya by Wizkid and Yeba by Kiss daniel.
