Chocolate City in collaboration with 100 Crowns, Martell and Continued Ent. surprised us with an Official MARTELL CYPHER  . People are still digesting the content of the cypher but many have already expressed an opinion on whether they think the cypher was dope or not. In my opinion, i think the cypher lived up to all expectations , all the featured rappers came out smoking . When you have a Legend like M.I , a veteran like Aq and Loose , and a rapidly growing brand like Blaqbonez , you really do not expect anything less.

For me , regardless of whether the rappers were dope or not i saw this from a business perspective and i think people missed the point. The point is M.I and Choc city are fighting for rappers to get paid for the features they do with brands . They are challenging other brands to ensure that whenever rappers are used for commercials , they should ensure they have a budget to cater for the rappers needs . It’s more like a campaign rather than an actual cypher or battle rap. I see it as a healthy competition between MARTELL and the other brands who supposedly do not pay acts for what they do for them . I really commend M.I and his team for their forward thinking.

I have always championed the cause that acts who get featured in projects should get royalties or compensation regardless of how small their contributions are . So long as you find a persons talent sufficient enough to be exploited , you need to pay for their services . Gone are the days where we would leverage on the fact that you are providing a platform as an excuse to cheat others. People have real needs and situations they are facing and their work of art need to pay their bills . Read more

Unfortunately , the same rappers who Choc city are opening up the market for are the same rappers that have come out to criticize the cypher for not being dope enough or off-the-top. In my Opinion , that is completely missing the point .

Fuck the industry , I pay Payola with suitcases – AQ

It is only a matter of time before the world hears of Kolaboy . Kolaboy, real names Nwodo Chinonso is following in the footsteps of the likes of Phyno , Illbliss , and Zoro. The Igbo rapper has definitely stepped up his game and is giving his predecessors a run for their money.

Kolaboy hails from Enugu state in Nigeria and that explains why his prefers to rap in Igbo Language . Igbo’s occupy the Eastern part of Nigeria and are some of the hardest working and most successful tribes in Africa . People insinuate that they are too desperate for money but that is a topic for another day.  Enugu is a state in Eastern Nigeria home to the likes of Flavor , Runtown , illbliss , Phyno just to mention a few , and it has long been the scouting ground for musical talents from the East . Just like Lagos , it is safe to say the Enugu is the capital of Igbo music .

Somedays ago Kolaboy released his new single titled “ Wire ” starring some of Instagram’s most notable Nigerian comedians i.e Broda Shaggi , MC Lively , Kreb , Oluwadolarz , Comedian Boma , Zfancy , Sydney Talker , Datvideoboyy , Xtacy , Mama  Chinedu,  Bishop Kalliper . Watch below .

Feyi has continued from where she left off in 2018. She is taking the United States by storm. She is relentless , her E.P is mind-blowing and her videos are even more jaw-dropping . If you have not listened to the E.P i urge you to do so at your own leisure .

Feyi is signed to Labelgold and it is impressive what they have achieved with her in the short amount of time . Labelgold provides a platform for R&B artistes to showcase their music . Today , they serve us the visuals to  “ Bruh ” ; Track no. 3 on the E.P – Hello My name is Feyi . It is fire!

Listen to her E.P here .

Congratulations to Lauretta and Jynnie flow on the release of their E.P today . These two talented  acts have been locked up in the studio for several months in a bid to give you a unique musical experience . Their E.P , Rhythm of the Wave is scheduled to drop later today and i can’t wait to get my hands on it. Although her collaborator  Jynnie flow is appearing on the blog for the first time, Lauretta, A.K.A Yemoja has been featured on this blog previously, and their is no question about how gifted she is ; her flows are un-matched .

Gimme is the first single off the E.P. Listening to it makes me even more impatient because these two acts seem to be able to create hits effortlessly together. I am eager to listen the rest of it . Gimme  , reminds me of Drake’s monster single ” One dance ” – Only that Gimme takes more of a rap & reggae direction . This E.P has the potential to pave the way for these two hard working artistes .

King Jaja Bars by illgod & xplain is a song I recommend hip-hop heads in Nigeria listen to. In my opinion, this is what African hip-hop should sound like. I am a believer that Africans should tell their story through their art, music, painting, or movies. The fact that we have abandoned our history for foreigners to document is disgusting. This is the same reason I am not a fan of the movie Wakanda. It is very obvious that the narrative of the movie was not conceived in the mind of an African child. It represents the narrative of people who have never set foot in Africa or who have an ulterior motive. A typical African child does not picture their superheroes as people dressed in a cape, suit, and mask. These are the concepts of foreign media outlets. Superheroes in Africa come in the form of Princess Amina, Jaja of Opobo, Fela, Sango, Amadioha, Ebubedike, Yaa Asantewa, Haile Selassie, and others.

The movie also seems to push an imperialist agenda—insinuating that African nations need the help of foreign bodies, the CIA to be exact, to solve their problems. The truth is that African nations do not need to depend on the CIA to defend themselves against foreign invasion; we should begin to be self-reliant, or at most, depend on other African countries within the region. The movie also implies that Africans need to be educated in foreign institutions, when the reality is that we should not concentrate on Western ideology but rather revert to African ideals and concepts. Movies like Wakanda and Coming to America promote false narratives about African nations. These movies carry hidden messages disguised as fiction. A careful blend of real places, like the Sambisa Forest, real people, and a false representation of who they are is a tactical way to blur the lines and misrepresent a group of people. This type of propaganda should be completely rejected.

There is no problem with listening to an outsider’s perspective about Africa, but where the problem lies is that people who are not aware of these hidden messages tend to accept the narratives without fact-checking. We, as Africans, have a duty to prevent foreign invasion into our history, culture, traditions, and ways of life. There is a need to counter these perspectives when they arise. We must be allowed to tell our own story. Would you not like to hear the African narrative regarding slavery or colonization—one that is devoid of European influences or tweaks?

I love the storytelling in this song. It is like an article written about King Jaja of Opobo, a true hero to the Opobo people. illgod and Xplain D Don collaborate on this one. The new offering, titled “King Jaja Bars,” is named after King Jaja of Opobo (full name: Jubo Jubogha; 1821–1891), who helped the Rivers people fight back against imperialism.

I dominate beats like Jaja dominated the oil trade.
